- aingerou: (INE gah roo) small clay statues of local gods and spirits, set everywhere
- ancieno: pureblood honorific for an elder male relative;
- archon: the Dane' named to interpret the Law of the Everlasting;
- bent, the: the talent for magic inborn as a result of Aurellian bloodlines;
- calefactory: warming room; a monastic room open to the outdoors with a great hearth kept lit during winter months so the monks can warm themselves;
- calyx: a votive vessel of clay, wood, or metal;
- Canon, the: the grand living pattern of the world to which, ideally, every natural object and living creature is connected; aka, the Great Dance;
- Cartamandua seal, the: a gryphon with a rolled map in its claws;
- citre'/citrae: copper coin;
- colineal: of two joined pureblood lines – such as the colineal surname of Cartamandua-Celestine;
- dorter: monastic dormitory;
- doulon: a highly addictive spell that transforms pain to pleasure;the deeper the addiction, the more pain required to trigger the spell's release;
- doulon paste: an odorless goo made from crushed, blood-spelled nivat seeds;
- dome'/doma: pureblood honorific for an unrelated male/female superior;
- ephrain: fragrant oil used for votive gifts and anointing kings and bishops;
- eqastre'/eqastra: pureblood honorific for an unrelated male/female equal in rank;
- Everlasting, the: as in, the Law of the Everlasting; the Danae concept of the entirety of nature - land, ocean, sky, beasts and sentient creatures, and the life and spirit that propels them through the turning of the seasons;
- fiche': line drawing map to scale;
- gatze'/gatzi: demon/demons;
- grav: landed Moriangi title from before the Aurellian conquest;
- grousherre: non-scale pictorial map;
- Hours, the: derived from the monastic tradition of regular prayer and readings; the number and names evolved throughout the centuries; at Gillarine the following were observed:
- Matins: the day's beginning at midnight;
- Lauds: 3am;
- Prime: the dawn Hour; approximately 6am;
- Terce: midmorn (three hours after dawn); 9am;
- Sext: noontide (six hours after dawn);
- Nones: (ninth hour after dawn); 3pm;
- Vespers: evening prayers; 5pm;
- Compline: night prayers before retiring at day's end; 7-8pm;
- inflation spell: an illusion spell that derives its general shape and appearance from a physical object;
- jackleg: trickster;
- jaque (jack): thick, padded military tunic;
- jupe: connive;
- lavatorium: monastic room with channeled water for washing;
- lune'/lunae: silver coin; worth forty citrae;
- mage: a magic-worker who is not a registered pureblood Aurellian, but has passed strenuous testing, encompassing skill with spell-making acquired through work and study;
- mappa mundi: map of the world;
- mardane: landed title granted since the Aurellian conquest;
- nivat: a plant whose aromatic seeds are used for seasoning and in spell making, particularly in the doulon;
- obscure': concealment spells, such as those that would mask one's footsteps or evade pursuers;
- sanguiera, orongia, vazte, kevrana:: "bleed suffer, die, purify"; the mantra of the Harrowers;
- patronn/matronn, capatronn/camatronn: pureblood formal address for father/mother, grandfather/grandmother;
- perficiimus: the Aurellian word for "we have finished"; used to signal the end of prayer or rite;
- plebeiu: pureblood honorific for the lowest-ranking male or female;
- pocardon: little city;
- portolan: nautical map of a seacoast;
- practor: a common priest;
- pureblood: descendants of Aurellian families whose blood is certified as "unmixed" with any other racial group; purebloods have extensive talent for magic;
- Pureblood Registry, the: the administrative body that oversees pureblood contracts, marriages, childbearing, and discipline;
- quatte'/quattae: measure of distance; length of a man's knucklebone; a "quat" for short;
- querce'/quercae: sixteen quattae;
- quelle'/quellae: sixteen hundred quercae;
- recondeur: a pureblood who has violated pureblood discipline - the marriage, breeding, or fugitive laws, or his bound service as stipulated in a contract;
- refectory: monastic dining room;
- saccheria: joint-fever; a chronic/recurrent illness which can cripple joints, mottle and swell skin, cause coughs and fevers; only the most resilient sufferers survive past 20;
- Saldon: the autumnal equinox;
- Scourge, the: the poisoning of Danae sianous by a violent death;
- sentinel: a Dané posted on the borders of Aeginea to warn of human contact and unusual occurrences in the area;
- serena: pureblood honorific for an elder female relative;serena pauli is used for a younger female;
- Sinduri Council: the high priests and priestesses of the elder gods;
- Sindure'/Sinduria: a high priest/priestess of the elder gods;
- sole'/solae: gold coin; worth 400 lunae;
- solicale: sunburst symbol of Iero's triumph over death; used in mosaics and pendants, wall decor, etc.
- sonnivar: an Evanori mountain horn, twelve feet long with a hook at the end;
- sop-house: cheap bathhouse where one can get ale, a tin tub, and a woman or boy for an hour;
- slavey: Navron colloquialism for a villein or bonded worker; essentially a slave, who earns nothing but his sustenance from his master;
- syfling: a soft spread made from cheese or fruit;
- teneamus: the Aurellian word for "we preserve"; the code word of the lighthouse cabal; teneo means "I preserve";
- thane: landed Evanori title from before the Aurellian conquest;
- twink: colloquialism for fooling someone;
- vyrste': an idiot or malformed child caused from inbreeding; used as an insult among purebloods;
- ysomar: acrid-smelling oil used to anoint the sick and dying;
- warlord: the warrior head of an Evanori clan; addressed as thane;
- warmoot: a formal convocation of Evanori warlords by the Duc of Evanore;
- word trigger: an enspelled word that links two people, at least one of whom is a sorcerer, and can be heard at any time or distance;

Danae Terminology
- allave': (ah LAH vay) the position of completion of a Danae kiran; one knee bent; the opposite leg stretched, aligned straight with the back, toe pointed, arms curved and fingertips resting lightly on the forehead;
- askon geraitz: (ah SKON GEH rights) "sleep with rich dreaming and rise with renewed life" – Danae farewell for those who are entering their sleep season;
- envisia seru: (ehn VIZ ee ah SEH roo) "The sight of you delights my eye"; formal greeting to a Dane';
- eppire: (eh PYRE) Danae dance move - a spin on one foot like a pirouette;
- gard: a cohesive design of magical light on a Dane''s body;
- facial gard: markings that signify Danae maturity and independence;
- mating gard: Danae markings on breasts (female) and genitals (male and female) that signify sexual maturity;
- separation gard: Danae markings on arms and legs which signify a separation from parents and invoke community responsibility for the young Dane''s welfare;
- walking gard: Danae skin markings on torso (male) and back (male and female); signify a level of independence and familiarity with the natural world;
- gyre : (jyre) the complete rotation of the four seasons; used among the Danae as a metaphor signifying completion;
- initiate: a Dane' who has passed the third remasti and is completing dance training, awaiting admission to the Canon;
- jeque: (ZHEH kay) Danae dance move - a simple straight-legged leap;
- kiran/kirani: (KEER ahn) a pattern/patterns of dance steps designed to bind a Dane''s passion and understanding to the natural world in order to evoke a very particular magic;
- kiran-hai: (KEER ahn HIGH) the natural entity – eg. tree, rock, field, watercourse – that is the particular object of a Dané's kiran;
- nestling: a Dané who has not passed the first remasti, yet dwelling in the parents' sianou;
- remasti: the four stages of Danae bodily development - separation, exploration, regeneration, maturity ;
- round: a dance interval in the Canon, involving specific order, customs, and dancers, for example

- wanderkin: a young Dane' who has completed the first remasti, the separation from parents, and is exploring the natural world under the protection of the whole community;

- Hansk: (hahnsk) island kingdom across the Caurean Sea, home of the raiders who harass the northern seacoast;
- Magora Syne: (ma GORE ah-sign) "Grand Window"; the most remote of the Duc of Evanore's three fortresses;
- Palinur: (PAH lih nure) once the seat of Caedmon, King of Ardra; when he united the provinces of Morian and Evanore with his own, it became Navronne's capital;
- Pontia: (PONCH ee ah) an Ardran town known for its intellectual life;
- Pyrrha: (PYRE ah) the land of volcanoes; an ancient country once renowned for art and philosophy;
- Renna: (REN nah) the Duc of Evanore's favored fortress;
